What demographic data does Progress Learning support from Clever and ClassLink?

Updated by DaCota Cole

Overview

Progress Learning imports student demographic data from your district's rostering service when rosters are synced with Progress Learning. Once synced in our system, you can use these fields to filter the Results Report by student group. Progress Learning only displays the data your district has shared with us.

Which fields come through depends on two things: the rostering service your district uses (Clever or ClassLink), and which fields your district has chosen to share with Progress Learning in that service. These fields are all optional and are not required.

Clever: supported demographic data

For Clever-rostered districts, Progress Learning can import gender, race, ethnicity, and a set of student designations such as IEP, ELL, Section 504, and disability type. Each field is optional and only comes through if your district shares it.

Race values appear in Progress Learning as American Indian/Alaskan, Asian, Black or African American, Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Multiracial, Other/Unknown, or White. Clever's "Caucasian" value appears as "White."

Gender and other values come directly from your district's student information system, so the options you see may differ from another district's.

Clever: how to share demographic data with Progress Learning

A Clever district administrator controls what Progress Learning receives. There's nothing to turn on in Progress Learning, and you don't need to contact us first.

Clever treats some fields, including IEP, ELL, free/reduced lunch, and Section 504 status, as sensitive. These aren't shared with apps by default, so they need to be shared separately from basic demographics.

  1. Sign in to your Clever district dashboard as a district administrator.
  2. Open the data sharing settings for Progress Learning.
  3. Share the student demographic fields you want to use: gender, race, and Hispanic/Latino ethnicity.
  4. To use designations, also share the fields in Clever's sensitive data section.
  5. Save your changes. The data comes through on your next roster sync.

For detailed steps in Clever, see Clever's help article on sharing sensitive data.

For ClassLink-rostered districts, Progress Learning can import gender, race, ethnicity, and ELL and IEP status. This works with both OneRoster 1.1 and 1.2. Each field is optional and only comes through if your district shares it.

Imported, but not currently available as a report filter

Race values appear in Progress Learning as American Indian/Alaskan, Asian, Black or African American, Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Multiracial, Other/Unknown, or White.

ClassLink doesn't currently send Progress Learning Section 504, disability type, or free/reduced lunch designations. Gifted status isn't imported from ClassLink yet.

A ClassLink Roster Server administrator controls what Progress Learning receives. There's nothing to turn on in Progress Learning, and you don't need to contact us first.

  1. Sign in to ClassLink Roster Server as a district administrator.
  2. Open the sharing settings for Progress Learning.
  3. Share demographics with Progress Learning. This sends gender, race, and Hispanic/Latino ethnicity.
  4. To use ELL and IEP designations, make sure those statuses are included as metadata on student demographics records, and that metadata is shared.
  5. Save your changes. The data comes through on your next roster sync.

Metadata fields are set up by each district, so their names and formats can vary. If ELL or IEP doesn't appear after a sync, ask your SIS or ClassLink administrator to confirm how those fields are named in your district's demographics metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I filter reports by demographic data?

In the Results Report, in both View by Assessment and View by Assignment, select Select Demographic Filters. District administrators, school administrators, and teachers can all use these filters. For step-by-step instructions, see How can I pull demographic information when viewing reports?

How do multiple filters work together?

Selections within one group include students who match any of them. Selections across groups include only students who match all of them. For example, selecting Male and Female under Gender, plus Multiracial under Race, shows Male or Female students who are Multiracial.

How soon will new or updated data appear?

Shared data is imported on your next roster sync. The filter options for a school then refresh every 4 hours.

Why don't I see a demographic group or value?

This usually happens for one of three reasons:

  • Your district isn't sharing that field with Progress Learning in Clever or ClassLink.
  • No students at the selected school have that value. Only values with at least one student appear.
  • The field isn't supported for your rostering service. Check the tables above.
Is sharing demographic data required?

No. All demographic fields are optional. Rostering works the same whether or not your district shares them.

Not at this time. Demographic filters are only available for districts rostered through Clever or ClassLink. To learn about rostering with Clever at no cost, see How can I save time by letting Clever handle my rostering in Progress Learning?
